The concept of the The Early Music
Ensemble
Clarinet Consort
With a similar formation to the English «consort» from the
17th century, the Early Music Ensemble Clarinet Consort uses the clarinet as an
innovation element, substituting the violas or the flutes while maintaining the
epoch instruments as the Continuo: Tiorba and Harpsichord.
This innovative combination of instruments allows great flexibility on the
interpretation of Early Music, whether it is from renaissance style or from the
late baroque, which would be far more complex if the instrument used were for a
single era.
This repertoire extension derives from the fact that the soprano clarinet is a
highly technical instrument, but it is mainly due to the versatility of the bass
clarinet. Given its characteristics, this instrument is availed by the Ensemble
Clarinet Consort as a solo or an accompaniment instrument, a double function
which makes it the hinge instrument of this innovative project.
In polyphonic renaissance repertoires, the bass blarinet performs the score for
the bass. In the baroque repertoire, the bass clarinet joins the tiorba and the
harpsichord, ensuring the body and depth to the continuo.
